On January 20, Guangzhou Zhiguang Electric Co., Ltd. (Zhiguang Electric) inked a supply and service agreement with Malaysia-based OpenRE Sdn Bhd. Under the agreement, Zhiguang Electric will supply 150 units of ZHIGUANG-branded, EU-certified, fully liquid-cooled all-in-one energy storage system to the Malaysian market. The systems are scheduled for delivery and commissioning within 2026, supporting the deployment of high-standard energy storage solutions in line with international and regional regulatory frameworks.
This cooperation represents a further step in Zhiguang Electric’s international strategy and reflects its growing engagement in emerging markets aligned with global energy transition agendas. Following its expansion in Europe and Africa, the partnership marks Zhiguang Electric’s entry into Southeast Asia, a region playing an increasingly important role in global decarbonization efforts and clean energy deployment.
Malaysia is currently at a pivotal stage of its energy transition. According to the national Energy Transition Roadmap, the country targets carbon neutrality by 2050, with renewable energy expected to account for 70% of the total energy mix. As variable renewable energy capacity continues to grow, demand for energy storage across commercial and industrial (C&I) applications, solar-plus-storage microgrids, and grid-side systems is rising steadily, underscoring the strategic role of storage in enhancing grid resilience and system flexibility.
OpenRE, a leading Malaysian company specializing in integrated “solar + storage + AI” solutions, has delivered multiple commercial and industrial solar-plus-storage projects and possesses in-depth knowledge of local market dynamics and regulatory environments. Its local expertise will facilitate the deployment and localization of Zhiguang Electric’s solutions in Malaysia. Zhiguang Electric contributes full-stack core energy storage capabilities—excluding battery cells—covering PCS, BMS, EMS, and related systems, providing a solid technical foundation for supporting Southeast Asia’s grid modernization and energy transition objectives.
The partnership highlights the complementary strengths of both parties. Through innovation in both technology and business models, it serves as a practical example of cross-border cooperation between Chinese and Malaysian energy storage enterprises. The agreement underscores the competitiveness of Zhiguang Electric’s EU-certified all-in-one systems across European and Asia-Pacific markets, while further demonstrating the scalability and adaptability of its international business model under diverse regulatory and market conditions.
Following a previous contract for the supply of hundreds of similar systems in Greece, Zhiguang Electric is positioning Malaysia as a strategic anchor for its continued international expansion. The project is expected to generate a demonstration effect in Malaysia and across the broader Southeast Asian region, contributing to regional decarbonization goals and offering a replicable cooperation model that supports ASEAN member states in advancing sustainable, secure, and resilient energy systems.
